Ten Days of Silent Zazen: What remains when memory and anticipation are starved of fuel?

On Day 3 of a silent sesshin, the mind becomes a caged beast. Without dopamine loops, conversation, or screens, the ego panics and unleashes every unresolved argument from seven years ago, along with a phantom craving for salted pistachios.

By Day 6, something extraordinary fractures. When you refuse to feed the internal narrative, the narrative runs out of breath.

Walking to the meditation hall at 4:30 AM in the freezing fog, I stepped onto wet gravel. For the first time in thirty-five years, there was no "I" walking on gravel. There was simply the crunch of granite, the smell of damp pine needles, and boundless presence without an inner narrator commenting on it.

We spend entire lifetimes narrating reality instead of experiencing it. Freedom is not an elevated mystical state with golden halos; it is the radical ordinary, liberated from the tyrant of self-importance.
